The 2004 Olympic Games emblem represents an olive wreath intertwined in a circle. The olive was the sacred tree. In the ancient Olympic Games, an olive tree branch, called "kotinos", was the official award for the Olympic champions.

The white and blue colors of the 2004 Athens Olympic Games emblem were chosen in order to remind the colors of the Greek flag.
