The hill of Kolonos Agoraios is dominated by the Temple of Hephaistos, or Hephaisteion, built in honor of Hephaistos and Athena Ergane, the two patron deites of artisans. The temple has four metopes showing the labours of Theseus, from which, in late years, took the name of Theseion. It is the best preserved example of a Doric temple in mainland Greece. The construction started between 460-450 B.C.and was completed in 420 B.C. In the 7h century A.D. the temple was converted into a church
of St. George and the interior was rebuilt accordingly.
