The Stoa of Attalos, situated on the east site of the Ancient Agora, was built under the reign of king Attalos II of Pergamon (159-138 BC), who studied in Athens, under the philosopher Karneades. The stoa is 116.5m lond and 20m wide, with double colonnades, on two floors, 45 Doric columns along the front and 22 Ionic columns inside. There are 21 rooms, on every floor, that were rented out, by the city authorities, as shops or offices. The stoa served, for centuries, as the main commercial center for the Athenians, until was destroyed by the Herulians, in 267 A.D. It was restored, between 1953-1956, by the American School
of Classical Studies, with the financial support of John D. Rockefeller Jr.
