In January 2002 Greece adopted in the euro
as its official currency and the drachma ceased its existence during February
2002.
There is no limit to the amount of foreign currency
or euros you may import to Greece.
Most banks will
operate currency exchange for foreign currency and travelers' checks and
will charge a percentage comisssion for the service, variating between
1-3%.You can exchange money and travellers' checks at commercial centres
which are found in all tourist centres which are open longer hours than
the banks. .
Main Post Offices will also operate currency exchange services.
You will always need to prove your identity when exchanging money.
Electronic Currency
Exchange: Next to an ATM you may also find a currency exchange machine,
which will accept notes of all major currencies and deliver you euros
in exchange. Just follow the instructions (in English and other languages)
carefully.
Credit Cards: Many
hotels, restaurants, ticket offices and shops accept credit cards but
it
is always advisable to ask about credit card acceptance before you sign
the register or order your food, to avoid difficulties later.
