"Sacred Gate"

The "Sacred Gate", or" Iera Pyli", built by Themistocles in 478, allowed the passage of river "Eridanos" and the entrance of the "Sacred Way", or "Iera Odos", which led to Eleusis, initiating the procession of the Eleusian Mysteries.
The gate was protected by two square towers, had a courtyard divided into two parts, one being occupied by the river bank.
